CYSTIC FIBROSISThe Cystic Fibrosis gene is one of the odd cases of a gene named for a disease rather than its normal trait -- a fatal genetic disease which is prevalent in people of white European descent. Type in "cystic fibrosis" to the UCSC Browser, and then answer the following questions:
- What is the symbol for the gene? What does the symbol stand for?
- On which chromosome is the gene located?
- Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
- How large is the gene? (in bp)
- What is the function of the protein produced by the normal allele of this gene? Where in the cell is this protein located?
- How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
- How common is the disease in the Caucasian population? What is the inheritance pattern of the disease?
- Print out the entire amino acid sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
- Scan through the genomic sequence and comment about how much of the gene is intron and how much is exon.
