Human Genome Scavenger Hunt: CYSTIC FIBROSIS

CYSTIC FIBROSIS

The Cystic Fibrosis gene is one of the odd cases of a gene named for a disease rather than its normal trait -- a fatal genetic disease which is prevalent in people of white European descent. Type in "cystic fibrosis" to the UCSC Browser, and then answer the following questions:
  1. What is the symbol for the gene? What does the symbol stand for?
  2. On which chromosome is the gene located?
  3. Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
  4. How large is the gene? (in bp)
  5. What is the function of the protein produced by the normal allele of this gene? Where in the cell is this protein located?
  6. How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
  7. How common is the disease in the Caucasian population? What is the inheritance pattern of the disease?
  8. Print out the entire amino acid sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
  9. Scan through the genomic sequence and comment about how much of the gene is intron and how much is exon.
