PROINSULIN

Type in "proinsulin" to the UCSC Browser, and then answer the following questions:
  1. What is the symbol for the gene?
  2. On which chromosome is the gene located?
  3. Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
  4. How large is the gene? (in bp)
  5. In what organ is this gene expressed? What is the function of the protein produced by this gene?
  6. Why is this gene refered to as "proinsulin precursor"?
  7. EXTRA CREDIT: What is the function of the signal peptide in this protein?
  8. How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
  9. Print out the entire amino acid sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
  10. Scan through the genomic sequence and comment about how much of the gene is intron and how much is exon.
