DYSTROPHIN

Dystrophin is a recently-discovered protein associated with a very serious genetic disorder. Type in "dystrophin" to the UCSC Browser, and then answer the following questions:
  1. What is the symbol for the gene? What does the symbol for this gene mean?
  2. Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
  3. How large is the gene? (in bp)
  4. What is the function of the protein produced by this gene?
  5. How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
  6. What genetic disorder is associated with mutations of the dystrophin gene?
  7. What specific mutations are assoicated with the disease allele?
  8. What is the inheritance pattern of the disease? How common is the disease?
  9. What unique characteristic makes the dystrophin gene noteworthy?
  10. Print out the first 100 amino acids in the sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
  11. Scan through the genomic sequence and comment about how much of the gene is intron and how much is exon.
