BRCA GENESMany physicians have begun routinely screening their patients for the alleles of genes known as BRCA1 or BRCA2. Type in (separately) "BRCA1" and "BRCA2" to the UCSC Browser, and then answer the following questions:
- What does the symbol for these genes mean?
- Do these genes have the same type of mutation?
BRCA1
- On which chromosome is the gene located?
- Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
- How large is the gene? (in bp)
- What is the function of the protein produced by this gene?
- How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
- What diseases are mutations of this gene associated with? What is the rate of disease occurence?
- Print out the entire amino acid sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
- Scan through the genomic sequence and comment about how much of the gene is intron and how much is exon.
BRCA2
- On which chromosome is the gene located?
- Where is the gene located on the chromosome? (between which bases?)
- How large is the gene? (in bp)
- What is the function of the protein produced by this gene?
- How large is the protein produced by this gene? (in aa)
- Print out the entire amino acid sequence of the protein (using the single letter aa code).
